Glad you mentioned that, as I was wondering if I needed to go out and buy the approx. 5 times more expensive "Creme double" here, but can now get away with normal cream.

Growing up's boring!

But probably ought to tell you that I've packed in my job. I leave at Christmas. Been hating it for a while and have noting else planned yet. Not sure it's a very grown up thing to do (neither does my Dad!) but looking forwards to actually doing a little less if you know what I mean - and hopefully enjoying the simple things a bit more. Catch you soon I hope.

I forgot to mention, check the fat content of the cream carefully,it needs to be at least 20% for it to work. I was using 39% double cream from a reasonably premium brand

"Arriving at Bruichladdich was fun, the yard was very busy with tourists and it took me 3 goes before I could get in the gates. The shop was well stocked and if I’d have had more than zero mobile reception, I could have phoned the office and waved to the webcam"

If you want I can send you a pic of you on the webcam in the stillroom?

Hi

Loving your blog at Bruichladdich - we have been there the last two years for the festival - and know Jim and Duncan well now. The academy sounds fantastic - never knew it was so hands on - and so early starts.

I would ask Jim about his special screen wash he used years ago - in deepest winter time - I think it has quiet a high proof. :-)

Enjoy

Hello,

Strawberries are one of those plants that really don't mind where they grow, so I wouldn't worry about whether you're growing them in open ground or in a planter. The season starts in mid summer and lasts as long as your plants have flowers for. You can extend the season at both ends by bringing the plants on under cover, like a poly tunnel or indoors. I once had fresh strawberries over christmas from a plant I kept in a cool windy spot outside and then brought indoors at the start of autumn.

If you're growing them for retail fruit production, then you'll need one of the more modern hybrid varieties bred for an optimum yield in your growing conditions.

I'm not qualified to recommend a specific named variety for you, but luckily I don't have to. I've done a bit of Googling about, see if you can talk this person into selling you a few creepers of his local hybrid for you to grow on. Otherwise I'd ask somebody like the Royal Horticultural Society.

Hello! Yes, you're quite correct, I completely forgot, so thank you for bringing it up. I didn't pop into the well signposted farm shop on my way out, mostly because it looked rather busy but also because I'm lucky enough to live very near another farm shop. I am highly in favour of produce with provenance and in season, everything I've read about the Beningbrough Home Farm is in keeping with that. It's also worth noting that it's within reasonable reach of North York by bicycle if it's a nice enough day, there are plenty of bike racks.
